An MBA can be one of the most valuable investments in a professional career. It can also be a significant commitment of time and money. If you are planning to study while you keep working, these questions will help you choose well.
1. What do you want the MBA to do for you?
Be specific. Are you aiming for a promotion, a move into management, a change of sector, or the skills to grow your own business? Your answer shapes everything else, from the specialisation you choose to the kind of programme that fits.
2. Is the university and programme properly recognised?
Check the university’s standing and the recognition of the degree in the places where you plan to work. Ask which national and international bodies recognise or accredit the institution and the programme, and confirm this independently.
3. Does the format fit your life?
Programmes differ in how they are delivered, online, blended or with in-person sessions, and in how flexible the schedule is. Think realistically about your working hours, travel and family commitments.
4. How much time will it really take?
Ask how many hours per week the programme expects, and how long most working students take to finish. A programme that fits your schedule is one you are more likely to complete.
5. What will you actually learn?
Look at the modules. A strong MBA covers strategy, finance, operations, marketing and leadership, and offers options that match your goals, for example a focus on Islamic finance or a particular sector.
6. What support is available?
Working students benefit from good academic support, clear communication and someone to turn to when things get busy. Local support in your own country can make a real difference.
7. What is the full cost?
Ask for the total cost, not just the headline fee, including registration, materials and any assessment fees, and any payment options.
