Many international programmes ask applicants to show their English proficiency, and IELTS and TOEFL are two of the most widely accepted tests. Both are well established. The right choice depends on where you are applying and which format suits you.
LinkOra is not an authorised representative of IELTS or TOEFL. Tests are booked directly with the official providers. Our Business English programme helps learners prepare.
The basics
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. For university study, the relevant version is usually IELTS Academic.
- TOEFL iBT is developed by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and is designed to measure English in academic settings.
Both tests assess the four core skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing.
Five questions to help you decide
1. Which test does your programme accept?
This is the most important question. Check the entry requirements of each programme you are considering, including the minimum score required. Many institutions accept both, but some prefer one.
2. Which format suits you?
The formats differ: for example in how the speaking section is delivered and in the style of questions. Look at official sample materials for both tests and notice which feels more natural to you.
3. Where and when can you take the test?
Check test-centre locations, test dates and any online options available to you, and plan for results to arrive before application deadlines.
4. How are scores reported?
Each test has its own score scale. Make sure you understand the current scoring system on the official website and what your target programme requires.
5. How long are scores valid?
Institutions usually accept scores for a limited period. Check the validity rules of both the test and your chosen institution.
Preparing well
Whichever test you choose, preparation makes a difference: understanding the format, practising under timed conditions and building the academic and professional English that the test measures, and that your studies will demand.
Our Business English & Test Preparation programme builds practical English for study and work, with preparation for both test formats.
